Chartered Accountant Day 2024: ICAI Celebrates 76 Years of Excellence
Every year on July 1, India celebrates Chartered Accountants Day, or CA Day, to commemorate the establishment of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). This year marks the 76th anniversary of ICAI, one of India’s oldest and most respected financial and accounting organizations.
CA Day 2024: History
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India was established on July 1, 1949, following the passage of The Chartered Accountants Act, 1949, by the Indian Parliament. Prior to ICAI’s establishment, the accounting profession in India was unregulated. ICAI introduced a structured framework to govern the education, qualifications, and professional conduct of Chartered Accountants across the nation.
CA Day 2024: Significance
CA Day celebrates the contributions, achievements, and integrity of Chartered Accountants in India’s financial and economic sectors. It underscores ICAI’s importance and the critical role that Chartered Accountants play in maintaining economic stability, promoting continuous professional development, and upholding high ethical standards. CA Day recognizes these professionals’ pivotal role in shaping a transparent, accountable, and prosperous financial future.
CA Day 2024: Why July 1?
Before India’s independence, the British government maintained accounts under the Companies Act and created a diploma program in accounting for auditors. Graduates of this program were eligible to work as auditors across the country. In 1930, the government established a register called the ‘Register of Accountants,’ listing individuals as Registered Accountants.
Due to the lack of effective norms and regulations, the accounting profession remained mostly unregulated. In 1948, an expert committee was established to address this issue. The committee recommended the creation of an autonomous accounting society to regulate the profession. Consequently, the Chartered Accountants Act was enacted in 1949, leading to the establishment of ICAI.
Role of CAs
Since ICAI’s inception, the role of Chartered Accountants has significantly evolved. Initially focused on auditing and financial reporting, their roles now encompass taxation, management consultancy, corporate governance, forensic accounting, financial planning, and more. CAs are trusted advisors and strategic partners in business, contributing to decision-making processes and ensuring financial stability.
